This guide will serve as your guide to text roleplay (TRP) in Ouroboros, to ensure you have an enjoyable roleplay (RP) experience. Before we start, let’s get familiar with some basic concepts of roleplay. The chart below will break down how to roleplay in 3 simple sections. For more information, ping helper.

Cue Type What It Does…
Dialogue What the character speaks. Use quotation marks “text” to signal the character is talking.
In Character
(IC)
Actions and thoughts of the character. Often times, these use italics.
Out of Character
(OOC)
Used to signal what the player (not character) is informing another player to do. The cue for these varies but are very different in character and dialogue. I.e. (Roll perception)

Before jumping into the roleplay, let’s run through some examples to fully understand how the RP works. Below is a dialogue conversation between two characters, Ducket and Iranis.

    • Iranis: “I got my string. But I will definitely note those down later. I want to ask, was ANYONE able to get out of her grasp?”
    • Ducket: “As of recently, no.”
    • Iranis: “Do you have an idea of where they keep their soul? Regardless, this is some valuable information Ducket, I thank you.”

Next, we have in character (IC). As stated above on the chart, this includes all actions and thoughts the character makes. Messages posted by those with Narrator power, will type to describe the scene. It is recommended to use italics when doing in character messages so other roleplayers may separate actions/thoughts with dialogue. Read on to see how actions are written.

    • Calci: Grabs and hugs his spellbook not responding.
    • Iranis: Enters the room and goes to his desk.
    • Kiratina: Kiratina stirs to wake, as she sits up, looking at Iranis, she walks over and gives him a hug.

Often times in TRP, a player will see a Narrator speaking in the channel. These are run by canon status Dungeon Masters to move along plot or moderate a situation going down. Narrator’s will openly speak out of Character (OOC) to alert the player of the next step needed with their character. Do note, using too much OOC in a short period may warrant a timeout. See example below.

    • Mari: She looks at him curiously. (What does he smell like?)
    • Narrator: (Make a perception check.)

Let’s review what all three look like together!

    • Narrator: You spend some time tracking an animal, but you find nothing at all.
    • Ken: Kenneth, with full determination still, will keep trying to track an animal. “Hmm…”
    • Narrator: (Roll nature or survival)
    • Ken: (I will roll survival this time.)
    • Narrator: Eventually Kenneth would find some wolf tracks.
    • Ken: “Oh! It looks like I may have found a friend. I can’t wait to bring it home to the guild.”

Chat Transitions

Let’s move towards joining a TRP channel. In the Ouroboros, there are a variety of TRP channels, a player may join. In this section, we will go over joining an active RP channel.

    • In TRP, you cannot change roleplay channels, unless there is a message stating a transition.
    • For example, using the Wayfinder to go anywhere other than the Ouroboros guild or your home location.
Good Transitions Avoid Using…
[character] enters the Wayfinder from [past location.] Jumps down from the rafters.
Enters through the doors of the guildhall. Appears.
Follows character into [place] Followed [character]
[Character] comes down the stairs, from her bedroom. Comes from bedroom.

Prior to joining, it is very important to announce the character’s arrival when entering the scene to avoid breaking immersion when in character. Also, it is recommended to rea the prior roleplay to get an understanding of what is currently in the scene.

TRP-XP

Every month, players are encouraged to partake in the roleplay channels to gain hours for roleplay done. The amount is gathered from either 30-31 day or posted for those who meet the minimum threshold on the 1st of the following month. Currently players may acquire up to 10 hours per month for any of their characters.

    • The winner who has sent the most for the month, is awarded a custom role in the server to wear for the following month, that they may customize by color and name.
    • In addition to their choice of 2 rewards and a message that can be posted once a week on the auto posting bot.
  •

Tupper Bot

In the RP channels, players use Tupper Bots to interact with their and other characters in roleplay. These characters are created on https://tupperbox.app/.

Text Appearance & Format

Here is a chart of all ways to stylize text with both the appearance and how the format to make such. This is pulled directly from Discord’s Markdown Text 101. Additional information can be found here with images for more further advanced markups.

Some players like to use -# to create a subtext, usually for whispering to each other, or muttering things under their breath. This is completely optional, and more of a style choice per player.
