Dungeon masters (DMs) are the backbone of the server and are responsible for the stories that are ran on Ouroboros. Both canon and trial DMs award the player base with benefits for participating in their games. This page details the specifics on types of games, how to award session rewards and the specifics for canon games.
After a session is hosted (or before for planning purposes), all loot whether mundane or magic is to be recorded in the session-log once the downtime days are rolled, except in the case of non-canon that awards 4 days. For non-canon and PBP quests, the log must be posted in 24 hours.
-
- XP is calculated as 75 x Hours Played x Level.
Higher tiered players playing on lower tiered session are only permitted to join if the DM permits.
-
- Level is referring to the character’s current canon level. For non-canon games, players take half of the hours played.
- Use the XP calculator to determine XP amount.
Canon
Most popular sessions hosted, that allow the altering and changing of the world. These award a variety of awards, either positive or negative. Only current approved characters may participate. Sessions must be at least 2 hours before the following rewards can be received on both player and dungeon master end.
- Players Receive: Full hour XP | 8-12 Downtime Days | Gold, magic item and/or rewards, dependent on reward standard and gold budget
- Dungeon Master’s receive: Full hour XP | Double downtime.
Session logs are required to be posted prior to characters returning to TRP channels. If a log is not posted within 24 hours, session awards are given non-canon rewards. Should a log be posted within 72 hours (3 days) sans the session summary, rewards are kept at full. After that amount, the log is then treated as a non-canon. Failure to update the log after 5 days to be completed, session log is deleted and all rewards for players and dungeon master are voided
Text Roleplay Quests¹ (TRP: Quests)
Canon Dungeon Master also have the option to run TRP: Quests, which are text-based adventures. Quests that take place in text roleplay (TRP). These sessions usually may only allow 2-4 player to participate. Rare occasions will permit a dungeon master to allowing more on the quest. These happen in the TRP Forum (role needed to access) under the specific DM’s quest post. Please Select TRP role to access this forum.
- Players may not play in more than one TRP quest at a time with the same character.
- Dungeon Masters may only run one at a time.
No XP, downtime (or gold bonus) are awarded. However, messages count towards the monthly message count for XP.
- Excessive OOC or unauthorized players attempting to interact will get timed-out at dungeon master’s discretion.
- Max gold budget for TRP quests is 300 GP. Common Magic items may be awarded, as long as the budget does not exceed the maximum.
Dungeon Master’s receive no rewards. Session logs are still required. Characters who are on TRP quests, may not join a canon session at the same time, until the TRP quest has been finished and posted. Failure to post a log within 5 days results in the session log being deleted, with rewards being lost.
Non-Canon (NC)
These are hosted by Trial Dungeon Masters. Non-cannon sessions do not affect the world, and any character may participate in these, regardless of tier. These sessions are extremely useful for testing out potential future builds and award the following after 2 hours of game play. Every once in a while, non-canons will award full hours, rather than half. This announcement is posted in news.
- Players Receive: Half hour XP | 4 Downtime Days | No gold, magic items or rewards may be kept.
- Dungeon Master’s receive: Full hour XP | 8 Downtime Days.
Should a log be posted within 72 hours (3 days) sans the session summary, rewards are kept. Failure to update the log after 5 days to be completed, session log is deleted and all hours and downtime days for players and dungeon master are voided.
Text Roleplay Sagas¹ (TRP: Sagas) NEW!
These are an additional game format Trial Dungeon Masters may run to gain their activity credit. Sagas are the non-canon version of text roleplay quests. They can be for any TTRPG format, but approval for non-listed games but be submitted first prior to hosting these. Players may join up to 2 TRP: Sagas at a time, but Dungeon Masters may only run one at a time (except in addition to a TRP: Quest). Please pick up the Saga role to access this forum.
- Current approved systems: Dungeons & Dragons (2014 and 2024), Pathfinder
While sagas do not award XP or rewards, half of all messages sent, count towards the monthly message count for XP.
- Excessive OOC or unauthorized players attempting to interact will get timed-out at dungeon master’s discretion.
Dungeon Master’s receive no rewards. Session logs are still required. Characters who are on TRP: Sagas, may not join more than 2 at the same time. Exception is if it is a TRP: Quest. Failure to post a log within 5 days results in the session log being deleted, with rewards being lost.
Please use the Session Log Generator for assistance on how what is needed for the session log. Failure to add the necessary needed information will result in the log being flagged by Admin.
The information below is in regard to canon games. Using the chart determines the max gold and magic items a DM may award the session as a whole. The chart is broken down by player count of what magic items of that tier may be given. To determine session, multiply the PLAYER x HOUR x TIER for the total gold budget amount. To calculate the total budget allocated for the session, use the gold budget calculator
- If multi-tier, do this formula for the individual ones.
- Items of lower tiers may be given on higher tiers once the hour amount is reached.
This chart reflects the budget of gold and magic items a Dungeon Master may award on a session. Draconic gifts are also included in this chart based by rarity.
- If a T2 tags along on a T3 game, they cannot be awarded a rare, even if the game goes over the minimum hour count needed to award.
- To rollover rewards, the session log must state along the lines of “Giving on PT 2” or “No rewards, rolling over to PT 2.”
- Any magic item with a mundane equivalent must be accounted for, buy offsetting the cost using allocated gold funds, or pot.
- Example: Cast-Off Studded Leather. Common rarity (no cost) + Mundane Value (45 GP)
In the case of mixed tiers, the following format example should be followed to properly follow magic item rewards. A 6-hour, 5 player game (2 players in T3, 3 players in T2) will result in the max items allocated for the session:
- Gold Budget: 2 x 1200 (T3) + 3 x 200 (T2) = 3,000 x 6 Hours = 18,000 GP
- MAX Magic Items permitted in session: 2 Rares, 3 Uncommon, 6 Common
Awarding Pot
Full Dungeon Masters have a monthly pot of 100 units that refresh every month, and do not roll over. The amount must be stated in the session log of how much pot has been used in excess of the gold and items awarded above. This pot is not per player, but an overall collective amount for the session. Each session is limited to a max use of 15 pot units.
Example: Spending 3 units of pot in a T3 game results in there being 97/100 left, with a collective amount of 3,600 GP added to the collective gold pot for the session
| Tier4 | Pot Multiplier |
|---|---|
| 1 | 50 GP |
| 2 | 200 GP |
| 3 | 1,200 GP |
| 4 | 3,000 GP |
Merchants NEW!
Dungeon Masters must be of rank T3 approval before using this feature. Some sessions will have merchants who may sell magic items to players but note they do not appear every session. Only one merchant may appear per game. Excessive use of the merchants will get the feature removed for that Dungeon Master.
Should a player purchase an item from a merchant, the session log must state “Item name (merchant)” and be recorded in the Merchant Trading Log. To place a merchant in the session, the price of the magic item follows the base magic item price (without price variance) and PPC market prices.
- Players must be present for the entire session to keep, otherwise leaving early will void the purchase resulting in both gold spent and item being lost.
- A player can only sell one magic item to the merchant per session, and it cannot be cursed as the merchants will not buy them.
The items rolled is the inventory they have for the session. Anyone can buy from it if they have the money but once it’s bought that’s it. The inventory does not restock. Merchants can only sell magic items found on the magic item tables. Please only use PHB spells for the scrolls. If an item not found on these tables, will eat up a magic item reward slot of that rarity. Table rolls be made in the corresponding Apollo thread for visibility & easy finding for auditing purposes. Please link the message in the log to this. The tables will be rolled in accordance with the tiers of the players who showed up.
- For example, a game with 6 players (2 T1, 4 T2) will get 6 rolls, 2 on table A and 4 on table B.
- For more information, reach out to Scrub Lord for the table specifics.
If there are any issues regarding Merchants, Scrub Lord will contact the Dungeon Master and discuss alternative, before Admin is informed.
Dragons, Hoards and Rewards
Dragons must be handled with care when being used by a DM. There must be a story element of why there is a dragon. Killing the dragon for the sake of killing one as an encounter is not a viable reason to place one in a session. Do not use the optional draconic gifts in FTD that award feats.
- Dragons cannot be placed inside any type of colosseum or have their hoards placed there. Non-canon games are the only exception to this.
- Ancient dragons are reserved for approved DMs (separate from tier approvals) and locked to only T4 sessions. Multi-tier sessions do not permit ancient dragons. It must be a sole T4 only session.
Dungeon Masters are required to use Fizban’s minions/liars when running a session that includes a dragon, appropriate for the age of the dragon. Thus, research on the DM’s end will be needed prior to hosting such a session by consulting the book for information. Failure to follow, will result in the DM’s ability to host future dragon sessions to be revoked.
- The Draconomicon has information relating to the different dragon types and their lairs.
Should a game session include a dragon’s hoard and/or hoard items, only one hoard is permitted and may only contain a single hoard item. A hoard item dropped on the session, cannot gain the benefit that session from the dragon’s hoard.
- If a Dungeon Master is caught using more than 1 dragon hoard and/or dropping multiple hoard items in a session, s/he will be restricted on hosting hoard sessions in the future. A restriction will be in place for a few months. Any attempts at bypassing will result in further restrictions, including but not limited to demotion of canon status.
Legendary Rewards
Dungeon Masters must be of rank T3 approval before using this feature. To award, Legendries may only be awarded to only a T4 game5 for 49 DM Pot (and may not be in excess or combination of the 15 DM pot permitted.) Only one of these may be awarded per game and must be awarded after a build-up of games had been set prior for the reward.
- Legendries cannot be asked for and are given at random to a player. Should a dungeon master award an item that a player specifically asked for, will lead to restrictions on future sessions. Characters that are awarded a legendary reward, void all other rewards (aside from gold) that the magic item budget permitted. Dragonic gifts (Ancients) fall under here as well.
Footnotes
- TRP sessions are posted in #session-announcement with the TRP role pinged. Sessions take place in TRP: Quests. Each Dungeon Master is permitted to one quest channel each. Messages sent in these quests are counted towards the TRP-XP monthly count.
- Max rewards should not be confused with guaranteed. Some sessions will or not award gold or items. This chart is merely the max limit a Full Status Dungeon Master may award that is based on how many players in the session play per hour.
- Example: If 2 T2 and 3 T1 players join a game, the MAX items that can be distributed are 2 Uncommon and 5 Common items.
- Consumable items count as half a magic item. To fulfill a single item rarity, two consumables = 1. Scrolls are not included in this and are counted as a full rarity slot.
- For mixed tiers, the tier that appears the most (mode) is the modifier. If the tier amounts are even, the lower tier modifier is taken.
- No mixed tier games may award legendary rarity items.
